Lieutenant George S. Tarr was killed on the 712th Tank battalion's first day in combat in Normandy. Ten days later his company commander, Captain Clifford Merrill, was wounded. While Merrill was recovering, his first sergeant, Charles Vinson, would write and keep him up to date on developments in the battalion's A Company. Since the letters were censored, he couldn't simply say that someone was killed or the letter would look like the redacted Mueller report. To get around the censors when a tanker was killed, Vinson would write that he was "with Lieutenant Tarr."
